October 22, 2014
To The Editor: I am writing to commend Bill Hutson and the Long Beach Island Chamber of Commerce, as well as Long Beach Township, for their support and implementation of the dune grass planting project this past Saturday.
I saw the original notice in the Sandpaper, and although I had known that I could get free dune grass to plant, I never knew that dedicated volunteers would do it for me. I called Bill, who was terrifically responsive and helpful, and I am today watering new dune grass across my entire young dune.
My family has owned an oceanfront LBI Home since 1966 and my 91 year old dad spent most of those years cultivating 25 foot dunes that were flattened by "Sandy." Ther are many others who had the same experience, and I encourage every oceanfront owner to take advantage of this valuable project each fall. I myself am going to have Bill teach me how to plant and volunteer next year - join me please, as we owe our sweet LBI every protection we can possibly provide. On Saturday October 12, 2013 Lorry's Motel held our 8th Annual Dune Grass Planting Fun Day At The LBI Beach, and was sponsored by the LBI Chamber of Commerce, Long Beach Township and Bowker's South Beach Grill. Unfortunately Superstorm Sandy the previous year on Oct. 29, 2012 wiped out almost all of the dune grass we planted previously, so we had to basically start over.
On October 13, 2012 Lorry's Motel held our 7th Annual Dune Grass Planting Fun Day At The LBI Beach with 160 volunteers. We didn't know that 16 days later Superstorm Sandy would hit Long Beach Island, NJ.
In October of 2011 was Lorry's Motel 6th Annual LBI Dune Grass Planting Fun Day At The Beach sponsored by Lorry's Island End Motel, Long Beach Township & Long Beach Island Business Alliance.
Thank Youto the 150 volunteers who planted over 10,000 pieces of dune grass in 2011 and made a real difference to the LBI Beaches.
The reason the LBI Dune Grass Planting Day has grown rapidly is:
1) It is a fun day at the Beautiful LBI Beach 2) Volunteers can get hours or credit towards their community service 3) Volunteers have a sense of satisfaction for making a real difference 4) LBI Dune grass planting is very easy with no big tools required 5) The Free 1 pm BBQ at Lorry's Motel is a lot of fun The following letter is from Lisa Dreher of Cub Scout Pack 42
Hi Bill, I just wanted to Thank You very much for setting up the camping for us. We ended up having 30 camping and then 53 total for the actual planting. The boys had an absolute BLAST! Many of them asked if we would be doing this again next year. I told them hopefully. Sorry I did not make it to the BBQ. We finished off about 1:30 ish and had to clean up. Many of our scouts were only able to plant for about an hour as they had ball games they had to get to in the afternoon. I hope the rest of the planting went well. Thanks again.
Note: 2011 Was The First Year Of Camping On The Beach Fri. Night. If Camping, Your Group Needs A Insurance Certificate In Advance.

Long Beach Island Dune Grass
A Dune On Long Beach Island, NJ - Without Dune Grass To Protect It From The LBI Storms
Above is a picture of a LBI Dune near Lorry's Motel on Long Beach Island, NJ before planting dune grass. As you can see, the middle of the dune doesn't have dune grass to keep the sand from being eroded by the wind or washed away.
Eventually this dune will possibly be blown away or collapse and the ocean will threaten homes, businesses, and possibly people's lives - unless LBI dune grass is planted.
Volunteers below from Girl Scout Troop # 341 from Hopatcong, NJ are planting dune grass to protect the dunes and help preserve Long Beach Island, NJ beaches. Pictures of the owner of Lorry's Island End Motel and some LBI volunteers are seen as they replaced the dune grass and posted new signs for keeping off the dunes to protect them.

If you or your group would like to volunteer for the annual "LBI Dune Grass Planting Fun Day At The Beach" every October, please call Bill Hutson at 609-492-6363 or e-mailLorrys@LorrysMotel.com. After planting the LBI dune grass, the LBI Chamber Of Commerce Provides A Free BBQ At 1 PM For All The Volunteers at Lorry's Island End Motel. Keep Off The LBI Dunes It Is Very Important For Everyone To Keep Off The LBI Dunes. Many people don't realize the importance of the dunes. The Dunes are not just sand hills to play on! They are God's way of protecting Long Beach Island from the relentless forces of very rough weather.
The dunes are the first line of defense to protect everyone against storms. Walking on the dunes breaks down the dune grass and kills the dune grass - making it easier for the sand to blow & wash away. Our LBI volunteers plant dune grass and other vegetation to enhance and fortify this fragile eco-system. We Hope You Will Help Us By Staying Off The LBI Dune Area. Don't Walk, Play, Nap, Dig, Frisbee, Or Touch The Dunes For Any Reason. The dunes are so important to our survival that we insist you stay off the dunes. Long Beach Island will issue a summons if necessary with aMandatory Court Appearance. Fines and Community Service May Result. Before And After Pictures Of Dune Grass Planting

Lorry's Motel Thanks All The LBI Volunteers Who Planted Long Beach Island, NJ Dune Grass
History Of Previous LBI Dune Grass Planting * 2010 was the 5th year and we had 150 volunteers who planted 10,000 pieces of dune grass
* 2009 we originally had over 100 LBI dune grass volunteers for our 4th year. However, very bad weather made us postpone the Oct 17th date to Oct. 24th. Again, very bad weather made us postpone the Oct. 24th date to Oct. 31st. Yes on Oct. 31st we did plant dune grass after 2 postponements, but with a lot fewer volunteers.
But thankfully we did plant dune grass as 2 weeks later we got hit with 3 days of very bad storms (worst since 1996). It looks like almost all of the dune grass we planted survived the storms. However, about a mile away from Lorry's Motel, a beach without dunes and dune grass to protect it from erosion almost went into the ocean (see picture at the top of this page).
* 2008 there were 54 volunteers to plant LBI dune grass for the 3rd year.
* 2007 we had 14 volunteers to plant dune grass the 2nd year. * 2006 there were only 5 volunteers for the 1st year to plant dune grass.
After planting the dune grass, Lorry's Island End Motel provides A Free BBQ At 1 PM For All The Volunteers.
